Samsung entered the SiC industry, and the development of South Korea's third-generation semiconductor industry accelerated

According to the news received by Lansheng Technology, Samsung Electronics is accelerating its entry into the next-generation power semiconductor market. After establishing a power semiconductor TF related to the development of SiC and GaN devices, it is currently actively investing in facilities required for R&D and prototype production.

According to reports, Samsung Electronics is trying to introduce more advanced 8-inch silicon carbide process equipment. It is understood that the investment completed so far is about 100 billion to 200 billion won. The scale of the investment is sufficient to enable mass production of prototypes, not just simple process development.

Compared with silicon-based semiconductors, SiC semiconductors have superior high-voltage and high-temperature performance, and are attracting attention as semiconductor devices for electrical equipment, renewable energy, and industrial applications. The market is currently dominated by semiconductor companies from Germany, the United States, and Japan.

With the clarification of cooperation projects between Infineon and ON Semi and automotive and energy companies, the overall SiC power component market will reach US$2.28 billion in 2023, with an annual growth rate of 41.4%.

At the same time, benefiting from the strong demand in the downstream application market, TrendForce predicts that the market size of SiC power components is expected to reach US$5.33 billion by 2026, and its mainstream applications still rely heavily on electric vehicles and renewable energy.
