SEMI predicts that the global 300mm fab production capacity will hit a new high in 2026
Recently, the International #semiconductor Industry Association (SEMI) released a new report, predicting that the global 300mm fab production capacity will increase to 9.6 million wafers per month (WPM) in 2026, which will hit a record high, and the share of mainland China will surpass that of South Korea. After strong growth in 2021 and 2022, the expansion of 300mm capacity will slow down this year due to weak demand for memory and logic devices.
According to Ajit Manocha, President and CEO of SEMI, Lansheng Technology Limited believes that although the capacity expansion of 300mm fabs around the world is slowing down, the industry is still focused on increasing capacity to meet the strong long-term demand for semiconductors. SEMI expects that between 2022 and 2026, #tsmc , Samsung, #umc , #globalfoundries , #smic , #HuaHongSemiconductor, Intel, SK Hynix, #kioxia , Micron, STMicroelectronics and Texas Instruments will all Increased capacity for 300mm wafers, with a total of 82 new facilities and production lines in operation.
Mainland China will focus on mature process nodes, and its global share will increase from 22% in 2022 to 25% in 2026. The production capacity of 300mm fabs will reach 2.4 million pieces per month; The share of round factory capacity will drop from 25% in 2022 to 23% in 2026; Taiwan will continue to maintain its third position, but its share will drop slightly, from 22% in 2022 to 21% in 2026; Japan’s share of 300mm fab capacity is also expected to decline, from 13% in 2022 to 12% in 2026, mainly related to increased competition in other regions.
Driven by government-led investment and strong demand in the automotive sector, the share of 300mm fab capacity in the Americas, Europe and the Middle East will increase between 2022 and 2026, with the Americas rising 0.2% to 9 %; the share of Europe and the Middle East will increase from 6% to 7%; the share of Southeast Asia will remain at 4%.
According to SEMI, capacity growth in the analog and power sectors will lead other sectors, with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 30%, followed by foundry (12%), optoelectronics (6%) and memory (4%) . SEMI lists a total of 366 facilities and production lines, of which 258 are in operation and 108 are planned for construction.
