Intel enters the AI-powered PC race with its first EUV-made chip

【Lansheng Technology News】Intel unveiled its first personal computer chipset equipped with artificial intelligence on Tuesday, as the U.S. chipmaker seeks to revive the personal computer market and regain its leadership in the global semiconductor industry. Intel said this is the first time it has created dedicated neural processing units for its central compute and graphics processors to handle AI workloads on PCs and other end-user devices.

Intel is keen to differentiate itself from rival US chip developer Nvidia, the market leader in the type of chips used to power artificial intelligence applications such as the ChatGPT chatbot.

Intel Executive Vice President Michelle Johnston Holthaus said that throughout 2024, we will launch tens of millions of artificial intelligence-enabled PCs to the market. "This is the inflection point that will drive energy-efficient AI at scale. Intel is the only company in the world that can deliver this at this scale."

Industry executives hope that artificial intelligence-powered computers can breathe new life into the PC market by giving users advanced applications such as extremely accurate speech-to-text dictation and generating images from spoken prompts.

Training large language models is still mostly done in cloud data centers, Holthaus said, but increasingly the decision-making workload that AI does — for example, generating answers to queries — is being done by devices like PCs or smartphones. She said that by 2025, more than 50% of enterprise-managed data will be created and processed outside the data center or cloud.

Intel's latest flagship chipset for computers, called Meteor Lake, is also its first to use the Intel 4 process node, which in turn is the company's first to use cutting-edge ultraviolet (EUV) lithography for chip production technology , Intel Vice President William Grimm is director of logic technology and development product engineering. The adoption of EUV lithography technology is a key step for the top U.S. chipmakers to regain their leadership in semiconductor manufacturing by 2025.
