STMicroelectronics launches FlightSense multi-zone ToF sensor
【Lansheng Technology News】STMicroelectronics has launched a new FlightSense multi-zone ranging sensor with a viewing angle of 90°. This optical sensor has a 33% wider viewing angle than the previous generation product, providing realistic scene perception capabilities for home automation, home appliances, computers, robots, and smart devices used in stores, factories, and other areas.

The expanded viewing angle provides users with greater design flexibility while maintaining accuracy, resolution, and ease of use.”
Different from general image sensors, time-of-flight (ToF) sensors represented by STMicroelectronics' new VL53L7CX do not need to capture images, so the user's personal privacy can be ensured. VL53L7CX expands the viewing angle to an unprecedented 90° (diagonal), which is almost equivalent to the viewing angle of a lens, and enhances the perception of the scene periphery, improving presence detection and system startup performance, such as starting the screen or waking up the oven, Coffee machines and other home appliances.
STMicroelectronics’ FlightSense multi-zone sensor is a powerful feature that provides 3D scene mapping and simultaneous distance measurement to multiple objects in multiple zones. With its multi-zone ranging function and motion indicator, the sensor can be used in applications such as people detection and tracking, behind-the-scenes warning, space occupancy detection, and warehousing/parking management.
The new sensor can also track full and empty trash cans, improving applications such as smart waste management systems. It can also improve the performance of the robot’s floor sensing, cliff detection, obstacle avoidance and small object detection. Other applications include projector keystone correction, and using the STGesture suite of software to optimize gesture recognition and expand hand tracking range.
The new VL53L7CX has native 64 sensing areas and can measure multiple objects within each area, with a maximum measuring distance of 350 cm. STMicroelectronics’ patented histogram algorithm can detect and measure multiple objects within the viewing angle, with anti-fouling capability of over 60 cm. Sensor linearity and measurement remain excellent even at measuring distances of only 2 cm.
In low-power mode, the sensor consumes only 5.4mW. In addition, VL53L7CX can also support autonomous operation mode, which allows the main control system to turn off the power and wake up the system only when the threshold is reached. Thresholds include distance to the nearest object, signal rate, and detected moving objects. The new sensor's pinouts and drivers are compatible with the previous generation component VL53L5CX.
STMicroelectronics provides comprehensive application design support services to help users take full advantage of these sensors, accelerate product launch, and reduce design risks. These supports include the VL53L7CX expansion board (X-NUCLEO-53L7A1), the VL53L7CX expansion board, and the development kit consisting of the STM32F401 Nucleo development board. To facilitate users to integrate sensors and quickly develop product prototypes, STMicroelectronics also provides a small-size SATEL-VL53L7CX sensor evaluation board.
In addition, STMicroelectronics provides a complete set of software, including Ultra Lite drivers, Linux drivers and STGesture code examples. The STM32 microcontroller rapid programming suite software X-CUBE-TOF1 contains application code examples and is compatible with the STM32CubeMX tool.
