Samsung plans to expand LGD LCD purchases next year

Recently, it was reported that Samsung Electronics has asked LG Display to increase the supply of large-size LCD panels by 1 million to 2 million units next year compared with this year. In this way, Samsung Electronics can reduce its dependence on China, and LG Display can also improve the utilization rate of its LCD lines.


According to Korean media reports on the 5th, Samsung Electronics plans to expand the number of large-size LCD panels supplied by LG Display to more than 5 million next year.


Initially, the VD department, which is responsible for Samsung Electronics' internal TV business, has been purchasing LCD panels from Samsung Display, as well as manufacturers such as BOE, CSOT and AUO.


However, due to intensified LCD competition, lower market demand and falling prices in recent years, the profitability of Samsung Display's LCD business has increasingly deteriorated. According to data from market research company Omdia, China's LCD market share has exceeded 40% in terms of revenue from 20% in 2016. Therefore, Samsung Display decided to withdraw from the LCD business and gradually closed its small and medium-sized production lines. The L8-2 production line, which produces large-size LCD panels for TVs, also ceased operations in the middle of last year.


In filling the gap in LCD panels, Samsung Electronics has significantly increased the supply of large-size LCD panels to LG Display since 2022. Industry insiders estimate that LG Display’s supply to Samsung Electronics will reach the level of 3 million to 4 million units in 2022 and 2023. This is expected to be further expanded next year.


Recently, it was reported that Samsung Electronics' VD department has asked LG Display to expand the supply of LCD panels to more than 5 million units next year to reduce dependence on Chinese manufacturers.


At the same time, from the perspective of LG Display, cooperation with Samsung Electronics is also welcome.


LG Display, like Samsung Display, has been working hard to reduce the proportion of LCD panel production due to the deterioration of LCD profitability. LG Display's LCD production lines in Paju and Gumi, South Korea, have reduced operations. However, LG Display’s LCD production line in Guangzhou, China has remained operational. However, LG Display's Q2 financial report conference call showed that the operating rate of its Guangzhou LCD line was only 50%. Expanding Samsung's supply capacity will increase the utilization rate of this production line.
