Samsung US wafer fab expansion

【Lansheng Technology News】In May 2022, Samsung announced the construction of a new wafer fab in Tyler, Texas, with an investment of US$17 billion. Samsung will begin purchasing equipment from December 2022, and the investment amount will also increase to US$25 billion. Samsung plans to operate in 2024, using EUV lithography exposure equipment and a 5-nanometer process to upgrade the 14-nanometer process of Samsung's Austin wafer fab to meet the needs of American customers.

Foreign media Sammobile reported that Samsung plans to build another building with an area of approximately 2.7 million square feet next to its new wafer fab in Tyler, and construction has already started. Samsung hired a local engineering company to review and inspect the construction, and according to the information, the new name was Samsung Fabrication Plant 2.

Samsung enters into development agreements with local governments that require the government to designate resources and establish expedited processes for review, approval and inspection of site development and building construction activities. Samsung has not yet announced plans to build a new building. Some people speculate that it may just be a storage material warehouse, or it may be part of an expanded production line.

According to media reports, Samsung has invested nearly US$200 billion to build 11 new semiconductor factories in Texas within 20 years. Samsung plans two in Austin and nine in Tyler, about 25 miles apart.
