Next-generation multi-zone time-of-flight sensor from STMicroelectronics improves ranging performance and energy efficiency

STMicroelectronics’ direct ToF sensor combines a 940nm vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser (VCSEL) and multi-zone SPAD (single-photon avalanche diode) detector array in a single module, along with an optical system consisting of filters and diffractive optical elements (DOE) . Among them, the performance of the optical system is better than that of traditional microlenses commonly used in similar alternative sensors. The new sensor has a field of view of 45°x45° (diagonal 65°), and calculates the distance from the object to the sensor by receiving reflected light. The longest measurement distance is 400 cm, and can measure 64 independent areas, with a maximum range measurement per second 30 times.
The new product VL53L8CX improves ranging performance by using a new generation of VCSEL light sources and advanced silicon-based optical components. Compared with the existing ranging sensor VL53L5CX, the new sensor improves its ability to resist ambient light interference. The daylight ranging performance in low-power mode is extended from 170 cm to 285 cm, while the power consumption is reduced from 4.5 mW to 1.6 mW. milliwatts.
STMicroelectronics released its first multi-zone time-of-flight sensor VL53L5CX in 2021. By improving ranging performance, the new VL53L8CX further widens the advantage gap between STMicroelectronics sensors and alternatives using traditional optics, which have less inherent ranging area and lower sensitivity in the peripheral measurement zone. Thanks to true 8x8 multi-area ranging, the VL53L8CX ensures consistent sensitivity across the entire field of view, high ranging accuracy, and longer range measurement in ambient light conditions.
When VL53L8CX is used for system activation and personnel presence detection, better immunity to ambient light interference makes the device respond faster and perform more stably. The VL53L8CX is also a hardware component of STMicroelectronics’ STGesture™ platform, along with the STSW-IMG035 gesture recognition software package and gesture EVK development tool. The new sensor provides the ranging accuracy required for repeatable motion interactions. In addition, in industrial bulk storage and warehousing, the VL53L8CX can improve the accuracy of capacity and level monitoring of bins, containers, silos and tanks. Excellent ranging accuracy also improves the performance of beverage machines such as coffee machines and beverage dispensers.
Mobile robots including automatic vacuum cleaners can use the VL53L8CX to improve tracking and navigation capabilities, such as floor sensing, small object detection, collision avoidance and suspended drop detection. Additionally, sync pins speed up projector and camera autofocus. There is also a motion indicator on the module, an auto-stop feature that allows for real-time action. The sensor is not affected by cover crosstalk at distances beyond 60 cm. Now, in addition to the 1MHz I2C interface, the new sensor also supports an SPI interface for data transmission up to 3MHz with the host controller.
Designers can use the supporting ecosystem to quickly evaluate the VL53L8CX and accelerate project development. The development ecosystem includes the X-NUCLEO-53L8A1 expansion board and SATEL-VL53L8 adapter board.
