Rohm CEO: Cooperation with Toshiba power devices may extend from production to development
【Lansheng Technology News】ROHM President and CEO Isao Matsumoto said the company hopes to expand its power semiconductor partnership with Toshiba to cover not only production but also development.
Matsumoto said the two companies hope to "discuss cooperation in development" after the joint production of power devices announced earlier is successfully launched.
Matsumotomiya said, "We will start with commissioned production and may enter the next stage. We hope to discuss cooperation in engineer exchanges and development in the future." When asked whether this cooperation may lead to business integration in the future, he responded "No decision has been made yet," he said.
In early December this year, Toshiba and Rohm announced that they would cooperate in the production of power semiconductors to strengthen their power semiconductor business, which is indispensable for electric vehicles (EV). Power semiconductors are used in products that can effectively control motors to reduce power consumption. Electric vehicles and power infrastructure have driven demand for them.
Rohm has a major advantage in electric vehicle components, while Toshiba excels in rail and power applications.
Toshiba and ROHM will produce the products at their respective factories in Ishikawa and Miyazaki prefectures. Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry will provide subsidies of up to 129.4 billion yen (approximately US$913 million) to cover part of the cost of the 388.3 billion yen project.
Toshiba will spend 2 trillion yen to go private on December 20 through a domestic consortium of more than 20 members led by Japan Industrial Partners (JIP) private equity fund. ROHM has joined the investor group and invested 300 billion yen to purchase shares.
