STMicroelectronics launches automotive-grade AI inertial measurement unit

【Lansheng Technology News】On December 12, 2023, STMicroelectronics’ automotive-grade ASM330LHHXG1 inertial measurement unit (IMU) integrates the sensor’s internal artificial intelligence and improved low-power operating mode, and extends the maximum operating temperature to 125°C to ensure that the sensor can operate in harsh environments. Work reliably in the environment.

STMicroelectronics’ new automotive-grade IMU integrates a three-axis accelerometer and a three-axis gyroscope, and the operating current is less than 800µA when both sensors are running simultaneously. The low power consumption feature reduces system power budget and promotes the use of this product in always-aware applications. By leveraging built-in machine learning cores (MLCs) and finite state machines (FSMs), the sensor's in-sensor AI reduces workload on the main processor, making event detection and classification faster and more energy efficient. The wide temperature range enables smart sensors including the ASM330LHHXG1 to be flexibly deployed in harsh conditions, including near engines, in direct sunlight, or when dissipated power on the board could raise temperatures above standard operating temperatures.

By integrating MLC and FSM, the ASM330LHHXG1 can be used for applications that require fast, deterministic response and low power consumption, including navigation assistance and telematics, anti-theft, collision detection and motion activation functions.

With Unico-GUI and AlgoBuilder software tools, and a MEMS sensor adapter board (STEVAL-MKI243A), STMicroelectronics' MEMS ecosystem helps accelerate application evaluation, prototyping and product development based on the ASM330LHHXG1. Additionally, engineers can find ready-to-use application code examples in ST’s GitHub repository. The MLC library contains use cases for tilt, tow, and vehicle status detection. The FSM library has more inspiring solutions, including motion/stationary detection and jitter detection.

Although the IMU has dual working modes, allowing designers to optimize data update rate and power consumption, the accelerometer and gyroscope have excellent time and temperature drift stability. The accelerometer's full-scale range can be set to ±2/±4/±8/±16g, and the gyroscope's angular rate can be set to ±125, ±250, ±500, ±1000, ±2000 or ±4000 degrees/second.

The ASM330LHHXG1 is an AEC-Q100 qualified product now in volume production and is currently available in an overmolded 14-lead plastic grid array (LGA) package
