Vishay launches new fully integrated ultra-small proximity sensor with standby current as low as 5 μA

 


【Lansheng Technology News】On January 25, 2024, Vishay Intertechnology, Inc. announced that its Optoelectronics Products Division launched a fully integrated new proximity sensor---VCNL36828P to improve the efficiency and performance of consumer electronics applications. The Vishay Semiconductors VCNL36828P uses a vertical cavity surface emitting laser (VCSEL) that integrates a photodiode, application specific integrated circuit (ASIC), 16-bit ADC and smart dual I2C slave address in a small 2.0 mm x 1.0 mm x 0.5 mm surface mount package.


Compared with the previous generation solution, the recently released proximity sensor has a 20% reduction in packaging area, a 20% reduction in standby current to only 5 μA, and a 40% increase in sunlight offset to 140 klx. With a sensor detection range of 200 mm and a typical rated voltage of 1.8 V, the device provides excellent proximity detection performance while reducing power consumption and improving efficiency in space-constrained, battery-powered applications.

The new proximity sensor can be used to automatically wake up and turn off smartphone and smartwatch screens, in addition to detecting whether users are wearing true wireless stereo (TWS) headsets, virtual reality/augmented reality (VR/AR) headsets and smart glasses. To reduce cost in these applications, the VCNL36828P smart dual I2C slave address can connect two proximity sensors without the need for a multiplexer.

The device's programmable interrupt feature allows designers to set upper and lower interrupt thresholds, reducing the need for continuous communication with the microcontroller. VCNL36828P uses intelligent cancellation technology to eliminate crosstalk, and its intelligent continuous design ensures accurate detection and faster response. The peak wavelength of VCSEL is 940 nm, with no visible "red tail". The sensor complies with RoHS and Vishay green standards and is halogen-free.
