STMicroelectronics launches new ultra-low-power STM32 MCU, making it easy for portable products to have stunning graphics effects

【Lansheng Technology News】On February 5, 2024, STMicroelectronics launched the STM32* microcontroller (MCU) integrating a new dedicated graphics accelerator, allowing cost-sensitive small products to bring a better graphics experience to users. The ultra-low-power MCUs STM32U5F9/G9 and STM32U5F7/G7 integrate 3MB of on-chip dynamic memory (SRAM), which can provide multiple frame buffer areas for the graphics display to save external memory chips. The new product also integrates STMicroelectronics' NeoChromVG graphics processor (GPU), which can achieve graphics effects comparable to more expensive high-end microprocessors.

The new series STM32U5 has a built-in NeoChromVG graphics processor. It is the first STM32 MCU to support hardware-accelerated vector operations and can render SVG images and vector fonts. The built-in dedicated GPU can also achieve high-end graphics effects such as image rotation, alpha transparency blending, and texture mapping for precise perspective. In addition, the new MCU has a JPEG codec for processing MJPEG video. These features allow product developers to use dynamic icons, support for multiple font sizes, scalable maps, video playback and other technologies in smart home appliances, smart home controllers, electric bicycles and industrial terminal equipment to bring more convenience to consumers. A new generation of portable products that is cool, more interesting, more intuitive and easy to use.

By integrating advanced graphics processing capabilities and large-capacity RAM memory on-chip, designers can develop high-performance graphics subsystems without the need for external memory, thereby saving PCB space and eliminating the need for off-chip high-speed signal transmission. In addition to 3MB of SRAM memory, 4MB of flash memory is integrated on-chip, providing ample non-volatile storage space for code and data.

The new MCU integrates all circuits in a low-cost 100-pin LQFP package, enabling a simple 4-layer PCB design and avoiding common problems caused by signal routing and electromagnetic compatibility (EMC). In the STM32U5G9J-DK2 graphics development kit specially developed for these MCUs, STMicroelectronics demonstrates this design idea, which developers can use as a hardware reference design to speed up product launch.

STM32U5F9/G9 and STM32U5F7/G7 belong to the STM32U5 ultra-low power product line. They use the advanced and energy-efficient Arm® Cortex®-M33 processor core, with a processing speed of 240 DMIPS when running at 160MHz, and ULPMark-CoreProfile (CP) test results. for 464 points. This series of MCUs has a 200nA standby mode, multiple low-power modes that support partial RAM content retention and fast wake-up functions. In running mode, the power consumption is only 16μA/MHz, giving greater flexibility in power consumption optimization and performance improvement. .

Developers can also take advantage of market-proven STM32 peripherals and IoT hardware security features, as well as the STM23Cube ecosystem of software tools, middleware, libraries and code samples.
